A boot camp championing the values of sustainability, rapid prototyping, and fabrication promoting local literature by designing public community libraries.
British Council Malaysia
Books on the Move is an initiative to promote the culture of local literature and art with public libraries located in train stations and malls. The community libraries were designed by Biji-Biji Initiative and its students using upcycled materials such as diesel drums. With the methodology of Design Thinking, the boot camp instituted an innovative shift to participants' mindsets to design and build a bookshelf made out of diesel drums.3 different units, or pop-up libraries were established in LRT stations, each of which were designed with a unique Malaysian story by Youth Made Malaysia students at the Me.reka Makerspace.Murals present at the public community libraries were also hand-painted by students from the Malaysian Institute of Art. The programme also involved collaboration with RapidKL, Think City, Education is Great, Youth Made Malaysia, Me.reka Makerspace, KLBaca! and the Malaysian Institute of Art. Truly, these sustainable libraries were a product of community effort!
